13 to be tested locally for meningitis - Vineland Daily Journal

VINELAND — South Jersey Healthcare announced Monday that it has recommended to 13 patients that they be tested for fungal meningitis based on screenings done over the weekend.

The hospital system said 87 people came to its Regional Medical Center Friday through Sunday for information on whether they had been exposed to the disease.

"These referrals were made because the person met established criteria, or upon evaluation by our head of infectious disease it was deemed prudent to have the person tested," according to a statement from the hospital. "It is still too early to speculate as to whether any of these people might have fungal meningitis."

The clinics were organized after the disclosure last week that hundreds of New Jersey residents may have been injected with a contaminated steroid. The steroid has been recalled.

South Jersey Healthcare's Regional Medical Center and Elmer Hospital, and Premier Orthopedics Surgical Associates, LLC, Vineland, were identified during a multistate investigation of fungal meningitis among patients who received methylprednisolone acetate injections, according to a statement from the state Department of Health.

Authorities stressed the medication was tainted before it was delivered to health facilities. The facilities would have had no way to know there were problems with the injections prior to being administered.

"SJH remains dedicated to offering support to every member of our community who may be affected by this medication," hospital President Chet Kaletkowski said. "I want to thank our staff and physicians, as well as our local health departments, for their efforts to ease community concern and provide the proper care for our neighbors when they need it most.

The state as of Monday is estimating perhaps 650 New Jerseyans may be at risk from steroid injections, although no actual cases of fungal meningitis are reported.

Eight deaths and more than 100 cases are reported in nine other states, though.

Mary E. O'Dowd, New Jersey's commissioner of health, said South Jersey Healthcare and Premier have done a "commendable job responding to this recall."
