The death toll from a suicide bomber attack in northwestern Pakistan is now reported to be nine people, including the senior minister of the provincial government, Bashir Bilour.

The doctor who treated Bilour, Arshad Javed, told RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal that the minister was critically injured when he was brought in.

"He was in shock. He was not breathing. His heartbeat had stopped, and his blood pressure was unrecordable. He was in a serious condition. [In the attack] nine were killed [including Bilour] and 17 were injured. Three of them are in critical condition," Javed said.

Pakistan has declared a day of morning for December 23. Bilour's funeral is scheduled for later in the day.

The bomber detonated his explosives on December 22 as a gathering of the Awami National Party that rules the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province was finishing.

Bilour was the apparent target of the bombing, for which the Pakistan Taliban claimed responsibility.

Pakistani Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf hailed Bilour's courage and passion:

"I've just telephoned the chief minister of Khyber Pashtunkhwa, and I assured him that the entire nation is with him and that the way Khyber Pashtunkhwa's provincial government is fighting terrorism is a matter of pride for us," Ashraf said. "And the federal government is ready to help [the provincial government] at any time, and whatever [the provincial government] needs, we'll provide."

Ashraf ordered the day of mourning to mark "Bilour's martyrdom." Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari also described Bilour's death as "a national loss."

"Bashir Bilour will always be remembered as a martyr who never flinched in the fight against militancy," Zardari said.

Bilour, 69, was an outspoken Awami National Party leader. The party is a secular group that has ruled the region for about one year and has aggressively opposed Islamist insurgents.

A local Taliban spokesman said on December 22 that the militant group has raised a special group of suicide bombers to attack "secular and anti-Islam" figures, including politicians.
