Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge appear closer to being new parents, as there's word that the Prince's wife is in labour.
Royal officials said that Kate travelled by car to St. Mary's Hospital in central London with Prince William at about 6 a.m. London time.
Kate -- also known as the Duchess of Cambridge -- is expected to give birth in the private Lindo Wing of the hospital, where Princess Diana gave birth to William and his younger brother, Prince Harry.
She will be looked after by a top-notch medical team led by royal gynecologist Dr. Marcus Setchell.
This news has been awaited by the world's media, staked outside the hospital for weeks.
The hospital set up a holding pen for reporters and cameras across the road from the hospital's entrance. In the days before the announcement, empty camera tripods stood in rows behind temporary fencing and orange cones, which kept reporters off the street and away from the front door.
This will be first child for the Duke and Duchess, who were married on April 29, 2011 at Westminster Abbey in a ceremony attended by celebrities, prime ministers and royals from around the world. The child will be third in line to the throne, whether it's a boy or a girl.
The baby's gender that is of particular interest because the prospect of Kate's pregnancy prompted a change to laws of succession. New rules ensure a daughter would not be passed over for the crown by a younger brother.
William and Kate met in 2001 when they were students at St. Andrew's University in Scotland, where they were housemates and friends before a romance blossomed. Theirs was a very modern romance, an on-and-off relationship was breathlessly chronicled by the British media before William finally proposed on a trip to Kenya in 2010.
The couple formally announced their engagement to the press at St. James's Palace on Nov. 16, 2010, when the bride-to-be revealed for the first time that she would wear the engagement ring given by Prince Charles to Princess Diana.
Pregnancy speculation began almost immediately after the nuptials, and on Dec. 3, 2012, St. James's Palace announced that the Duchess was expecting.
