County Council unanimously passed Warden Hector Macmillan's suggestion to send condolences to the residents of Lac-Megantic.
The small Quebec town was rocked by explosions in the early hours of July 6 after a train derailed in the heart of the downtown.
So far, 37 people have been confirmed dead, and it's expected that number will rise to at least 50 as searchers continue to comb through the rubble.
"I can't imagine what it would be like having something as terrible as a train tragedy happen right inside your small town, like any of the small towns we have in Northumberland County," Macmillan said this week.
"I thought the least we can do is send our condolences from Northumberland County."
People wishing to sign the book of condolence are invited to attend the Northumberland County offices at 555 Courthouse Road (main lobby) in Cobourg, weekdays from Wednesday, July 17 to Friday, Aug. 9, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Alternatively, members of the public are invited to write their condolence messages at the office of their local municipality, weekdays from Thursday, July 18 to Friday, Aug. 9 , 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Once compiled, all of the condolence messages will be sent to the Town of Lac-Mégantic.
