A woman is dead and more than 200,000 homes and businesses were without power Saturday evening after severe thunderstorms moved across Ontario and Quebec Friday evening.

The woman a 21-year-old city employee in Montreal, died after being hit by a falling branch. Several children were also injured and thousands are still without power.

The employee was working at a municipal swimming pool in Boucherville, on Montreal's south shore. Quebec's workplace safety commission announced there will be an investigation into why the pool was still open when such a violent storm was approaching.

Lightning and strong winds felled trees and electric poles across Quebec, from the Gatineau region near Ottawa to the Eastern Townships.

Throughout Quebec, more than 178,000 people were still without power at 9 p.m. Saturday, Hydro-Quebec said. Most of those customers were in the Laurentians where 55,000 customers still had no electricity.

In Laval, 40,000 people were still in the dark.

Hydro-Quebec said it expected 70% of customers to have power reconnected by Sunday.

As of 7:30 p.m. Saturday, approximately 8,000 customers in the Hamilton area didn't have power, Horizon Utilities said on its site, adding 3,500 of those customers are in the lower city of Hamilton.

It attributed the outages to trees or branches falling on hydro lines or lightning striking transformers and hydro poles.

Local media reported that police responded to more than 300 calls Friday night in the city's centre, and Environment Canada said it received numerous reports that the storm spawned funnel clouds.

By Saturday evening, Hydro One said 76,782 customers still had no power provincewide.

The Bancroft area was the worst hit area of the province with 29,000 customers losing power.

As of Saturday evening, Hydro One said some of the 10,412 customers in Bancroft area still without power may not have it restored until 9 p.m. July 28.

In the Peterborough area, more than 1,500 Hydro One customers lost electricity and some are expected be without power until 11 p.m. Sunday.

For 5,905 customers in the City of Kawartha Lakes power may not be restored until 11 p.m. Monday.

Niagara Falls was also hit hard and emergency personnel and municipal crews were inundated with storm calls Friday for trees down, arching hydro wires, flooding, lightning strikes and alarms.

In a statement, Hydro One spokesman Len McMillan said, "Our crews are out in full force clearing trees and rebuilding the distribution system to get power flowing and we appreciate our customers' patience."
