Op-Ed: Sen. Mike Duffy — Confess so we can stop spending taxpayer money! - DigitalJournal.com

The embattled, and let's say it right off the top, dishonest, Senator Mike Duffy is making things more difficult with regard his false residency and travel claims. He's also making things more expensive for the Canadian taxpayer.

The RCMP are leading the investigation into Mr. Duffy's - we have to say this - alleged wrongdoings and they are being forced to- spend hours of staff time daily, for months now. The cost to the Canadian taxpayer for this alone is mounting. The RCMP have also had to bring others in from other government departments and work the case, notably Mark Grenon, a chartered accountant who is a certified fraud examiner, a high-ranking staff in the public works office. The private accounting firm, Deliotte, has also been used, and extensively, to look into Duffy's financial records. Mike Duffy: false residency and per diem claims Where there is smoke there is a conflagration and the list of items they are investigating is as long as that of Justin Bieber indiscretions since the Selena Gomez break-up. He hasn't lived in P.E.I. since Trudeau lead the Liberal Party, Pierre Trudeau, not Justin, yet each year since becoming a senator in 2009 he listed his primary residence not as Ottawa, where he has lived since the early 1970's, but as a family cottage near Charlottetown. Doing so allowed him to make a yearly $22,000 residency claim on senate forms for having a primary residence over 100 km. from Ottawa. He was appointed to the post as payback for services rendered to the Conservative Parry but must have felt that the $132,000 salary wasn't enough. Some of the issues the RCMP, Mr. Grenon and Deloitte are looking into include the fact that Mr. Duffy's driver's licence has always been an Ontario licence until getting the senatorial appointment four years ago. After listing his primary residence on senate forms he then applied for and obtained a P.E.I. driver's licence. Last year when he realized he'd need one to pull off his shenanigans he tried to get a P.E.I. health card and RCMP say he asked officials in that province to expedite the card, requesting of them that his request be kept confidential. RCMP say that he changed his banking address from an Ontario address to a P.E.I. address immediately after the RCMP announced they were auditing senators primary residence claims. Further, Mr. Duffy filed per diem charges to the Canadian taxpayers on days when he said he was on Senate business but was 1) in Florida for personal reasons; 2) in P.E.I. on holiday and 3) campaigning for the Conservatives in the 2011 election campaign. RCMP seek Duffy accounts RCMP Cpl. Greg Horton is the force's lead investigator into Mr. Duffy and he filed papers in an Ottawa courtroom on Thursday requesting that the CIBC and RBC hand over Duffy's personal account information with each bank so they might further discover the fraud the former journalist perpetrated on the Canadian taxpayer. "I believe that Senator Duffy has demonstrated a pattern of filing fraudulent expense claims," Cpl. Horton wrote. "He maintains that his primary residence is in P.E.I. so that he can collect housing and travel allowances from the Senate, however uses his Ottawa residence as his primary residence when convenient, such as when dealing with OHIP so that he can obtain medical coverage in Ontario." How much Canada has spent trying to find out how much Mike Duffy was given that he was not entitled to obviously isn 't know because the whole process is still ongoing. But given all of this, Mr. Duffy's actions in playing things tight to the hip are unconscionable and if he had a shred of decency left he'd sit down with the RCMP and fess up. In other words he'd give the Canadian taxpayer a break and stop the bleeding. But don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen.
