A man accused of impersonating a soldier on Remembrance Day had a lawyer appear on his behalf for an initial court appearance Tuesday.

Franck Gervais, 32, faces four charges over allegations he impersonated a public officer and unlawfully used a military uniform and decorations. He came into the public eye when he was interviewed on television in military dress during Remembrance Day ceremonies at the National War Memorial.

"He's taking these charges very seriously," his Montreal-based lawyer, Claude Levesque, told reporters in French outside court Tuesday.

He declined to comment further, saying he will await disclosure of the Crown's case before contemplating strategy.

Gervais was charged and released on Nov. 15. He was also suspended from his job with Potvin Construction.

His next court date is Jan. 6.
