Jacques Boissinot / THE CANADIAN PRESSAndré Boisclair has dropped a $200,000 defamation lawsuit against former Coalition Avenir Québec MP Jacques Duchesneau and party leader François Legault following an apology issued by the two defendants.
A press release issued Monday morning by the party states that Duchesneau admits comments he made on September 25 and 26, 2013 could have led to "inaccurate and unfounded assumptions made about Mr. Boisclair that could damage his reputation." Party leader François Legault also admits his fault in the release.
Terms of the agreement between Boisclair and Duchesneau are confidential and both parties confirmed they would not be commenting on the topic. The CAQ states the responsibility for the legal fees incurred in this case will not be passed on to the National Assembly.
Boisclair sought $100,000 for moral damages and another $100,000 for the CAQ members' "illicit and intentional" lack of respect for his fundamental rights. He also demanded a letter retracting the comments be sent to every media outlet that had shared Duchesneau's comments.
Boisclair, who left his position in New York after the comments were made, has since become a part-time advisor to Environment Minister David Heurtel.
He is also president of COMEX, a committee in charge of holding public meetings regarding the territory government by the James Bay Agreement.
