SUNDERLAND, Ont. - Darwin can have his cake and eat it, too.
The infamous Japanese snow macaque — better known as "the Ikea monkey" cautiously peeked out of his window at the reporters and photographers watching him at Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary Friday, as a tiered treat of strawberries and dates was placed in front of him within his outdoor enclosure.
The cake — soon devoured by the 2 1/2-year-old primate — was to celebrate his second anniversary at the rural animal sanctuary. He came after a judge determined in September 2013 that the monkey was best served by staying at Story Book Farm and not in the care of his former owner Yasmin Nakhuda in Toronto.
"He's doing great and is three times his size," said Daina Liepa, a volunteer and member of the sanctuary's fundraising committee. "Because he was wearing that stupid coat and clothes and a diaper, his fur was all patchy. Now he's very healthy and stunning. He loves throwing the ball around and ricocheting all over the place."
Darwin was spotted in December 2012 wearing the now-iconic shearling coat in the parking lot of an Ikea store in north Toronto, after escaping his crate inside Nakhuda's car.
