A half million people in the Philippines have evacuated coastal villages and landslide-prone areas ahead of a powerful typhoon.
Weather forecasters warn that Typhoon Hagupit is expected to blast into the Philippines late Saturday or early Sunday, impacting parts of a region that was devastated by last year's deadly Typhoon Haiyan.
Officials say about half of the country's provinces are considered at risk from Hagupit.
The storm weakened slightly as it moved across the Pacific Ocean Friday, dipping below the "Super Typhoon" level as its maximum winds dropped to 195 kilometers per hour with higher gusts. But weather officials predicted Hagupit will be the strongest storm to hit the Philippines this year.
Forecasters are predicting torrential rain and storm surges of more than four meters along the coast.
Central provinces were devastated last year by Typhoon Haiyan, which killed more than 7,300 people and was measured as the most powerful storm ever recorded on land. Thousands of people in the region still live in tents.
In a meeting with emergency officials Thursday, President Benigno Aquino ordered steps to prevent panic buying and food hoarding. He also called for officials to "prepare for everything."
The Southeast Asian nation has faced unusually severe storms in the past few years, including Typhoon Bopha, which killed or left more than 1,900 people missing in 2012.
