Respect police while criticizing them - Timmins Press

It's sad that this is what it's taken for people to wake up and realize words have consequences.

Two police officers are now dead. Executed in daylight as they sat in a cruiser in Brooklyn.

It's clear that their killer, Baltimore man Ismaaiyl Brinsley, had problems. But this isn't just a mental health issue.

Brinsley posted online that he was planning retribution against police for the killings of black men in the United States.

In the weeks leading up to this, protesters have been causing havoc and unleashing strong words against all police officers due to the actions of a few – the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown.

Just over a week ago, marchers chanted "What do we want? Dead cops. When do we want them? Now" in the streets of New York.

This has to stop. Now. It will only foster more violence.

It's important to be critical of the police when they slip up. Canadians were certainly reminded of this as they watched the G20 excesses unfold.

Reminding the police who is boss through reasonable protest makes sense. But some of the recent protest tactics don't.

Toronto Police Association president Mike McCormack wrote the following in a Monday column for the Toronto Sun: "These difficult conversations absolutely need to continue but we now know that there are consequences when individuals, groups and politicians post irresponsible anti-police rhetoric, for the sole purpose of inflaming an already volatile situation."

Wise words. While the conversation in Canada thankfully isn't as heated as in the United States, things do get out of hand at times.

In the summer of 2013 hundreds of people took to the streets in Toronto to protest the death of Sammy Yatim, after a police constable shot the 18-year-old on a streetcar.

Demanding an investigation made sense. But the chants of "no racist police" and signs reading "f--- you Toronto police" definitely didn't.

To go around the streets of Toronto acting like all police officers are racist murderers is absurd.

Let's not forget police officers are our neighbours, friends, family members.

They're who we call when we need help. If they weren't around, society would be total chaos.

Merry Christmas to the men and women who wear the badge!
