The march was organised by Reverend Al Sharpton, the veteran civil rights leader, but after it reached its destination in front of the US Congress, it heard from families of many of the victims.
"My husband was a quiet man but he's making a lot of noise right now," said Esaw Snipes-Garner, the widow of Mr Garner. "His voice will be heard. "
Different speakers made different demands but all called for more curbs on the police and more accountability when officers used lethal force.

One repeated demand was for investigations of police shootings to be taken out of the hands of local prosecutors, who have often have close ties to officers involved in the killing, and given instead to federal investigators.
Critics have said that in both the Garner and the Brown cases, local prosecutors made little effort to bring charges against the police forces they worked with.
Other demands included forcing police to wear body cameras, which would record their interactions with the public.
Among the demonstrators was Tawanna Tyson, an African-American mother-of-three who works as a police dispatcher. "We need a law that says that police officers aren't going to investigated by their peers," Mrs Tyson said. "I feel very concerned for my sons' safety."
While the crowd was largely black there many white supporters in the crowd.
Meghan Snyder held a sign reading "White America: Silence = Complicity". She said the sign meant "shutting up when black people should be speaking and speaking up when black voices are tired".
While the House of Representatives has gone into recess, members of the Senate were in their chamber for a rare set of Saturday votes. The Republican Party will take over both chambers of Congress in January and unlikely to engage with many of the protesters' demands.
A similar protest took place in New York, ending at the headquarters of the New York Police Department.
