NEW YORK — Prince William and Duchess Kate's last day in New York culminated at the kind of event that New York does best: a glittery, dressy and pricey gala at the city's most glamorous venue, the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Dressed in a dark green Jenny Packham gown (she's worn it twice before), her hair in an elegant up-do, she and Will were the guests of honor at a black-tie dinner for some 450 people to raise scholarship money for their alma mater, 600-year-old St. Andrews University of Scotland.

Cheers went up from the fans across the street and media camera lights flashed as they arrived shortly after 7 p.m., ushered by kilt-dressed bagpipers, greeted at the top of the famous stairs by former students of St. Andrews, where Will and Kate fell in love.

"It was wonderful to meet them and they asked if we were former students. It's great to have them here," said Caroline Guenther, 27, according to pool reports. "She looked beautiful. This will be a great night."

The night followed a day when they visited the September 11 memorial in the morning and then attended to one of their top charity interests, child development.

The couple paid a visit to The Door and the CityKids Foundation, longstanding programs that help disadvantaged young people reach their potential through arts-education.

This is Kate's particular interest, the use of the arts as therapy and enrichment for kids. (She got her college degree in art history.)

The two met with students and watched performances during the hour-long event in the West Village. Will was so impressed with a powerful, moving show by Steven Prescod, 22, of Brooklyn, about his jailed father and his own brushes with jail, that he offered to help him take his story to the world stage.

00:03 Where here on Tuesday morning in court this. Glorious warm
00:07 sunny weather waiting for prince William and duchess Kate Snow arrived
00:10 just kidding it's pouring now. As one reporter hears that it
00:14 feels like Armageddon. Umbrella for tilting over the rain is coming
00:19 sideways and royals should be getting here at around 10 AM.
00:23 To pay their effect at midnight eleven memorial which is yeah
00:27 does. Eight is wearing a very bright future posts. And she's
00:35 shaking hands of people right now. Now the couple had the
00:41 letter over to the memorial in this weather. She's wearing black
00:50 love them very jealous that we had last. And she is
00:55 really of isn't. And of beautiful bright it's. The only bright
01:02 and sunny and happy things on his other life very brands
01:06 and cold wet day. The couple is standing. The wall. And
01:15 they are talking. It's almost. A weirdly dramatic scene with the
01:21 water flowing down the memorial and the water flowing down from
01:25 the sky and every. Oneself and bowl. And the royal couple
01:30 offending quite a bit of time at the memorial. With a
01:34 little bit surprising given the weather. We kind of expected them
01:38 to go inside I know and warmup. They are being handed
01:43 flowers. David laying down flowers at the memorial wall in hold
01:57 them. The volatile. Thank god take care of your life. And
02:12 now they are heading inside. It's still raining it. Still cold.
02:27 The duchess Kate and Prince William came they thought they conquered
02:30 the weather. And they visited the 9/11 memorial apparently they are
02:35 impervious to the type of weather while the rest of us
02:38 here are soaked and freezing. And fairly I would say miserable.
02:43 This my friends is the fat looked like recovering the royal.

"William said he wanted to help me put this together," Prescod said later. "He gave me his contact number and said to reach out to him. They brought hope to me. I had a low period in my life and never in a million years did I expect I would be performing for the duke and duchess."

The couple started out earlier today under somber skies with a somber visit to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

As Will held an umbrella over his wife, they placed flowers at the edge of one of the reflecting pools where the two towers of the World Trade Center once loomed over downtown New York.

The flower-laying ritual took only minutes, given the wretched weather. Then they went inside for a tour of the newly opened museum, and also visited the new One World Trade Center, now the tallest building in New York.

Kate was dressed in a fuchsia, double-breasted Mulberry Editor coat, her hair pulled back in a ponytail. She wore a black dress by Seraphine, a favorite maternity line, underneath, palace officials said.

Will carried an umbrella from the Carlyle Hotel where they have been staying since they arrived Sunday night.

The Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York were almost as devastating for the British as they were for New Yorkers: There were 67 British citizens killed in the destruction of the twin towers, more than any other foreign country.

On the tragic day, Queen Elizabeth II ordered the royal band to play the American national anthem for weeping tourists outside Buckingham Palace. The British later built a tiny memorial park in downtown New York to honor their dead at the World Trade Center.

Every senior royal who has visited New York since then, whether it's the queen or Will's father, Prince Charles, has visited the 9/11 site to pay tribute.

According to Joe Daniels, president of the museum and memorial, Will and Kate were deeply engaged during the museum tour, asking a lot of questions about 9/11, about how the families of the victims have embraced the memorial, about the artifacts and the reflecting pools and their meanings, according to the pool reports.

On seeing the famous "survivors' staircase," which connected the World Trade Center's plaza to Vesey Street, "They had lots of questions and interest in how these stairs were used by hundreds of people on that day to escape," Daniels said, according to the pool report.

Will and Kate signed their names — William and Catherine — to the interactive steel beam at the museum.

The couple also attended receptions later, including one at the Empire State Building.

"Wow, this is great!" Will said to Mayor Bill de Blasio as he reached the 86th-floor observation deck, stepped toward the edge of the building and looked through the safety railings, according to the pool report.

As he walked around the perimeter of the deck, stopping to point out landmarks and sights to the others, he seemed in good spirits and genuinely enthusiastic about being at the top of the most famous New York landmark.

At the other reception, which celebrated British creative artists in New York, there were about 80 guests, including Harvey Weinstein, Patrick Stewart, Archie Panjabi, Gareth Neame (executive producer of Downton Abbey),and Imogen Lloyd-Webber (daughter of Sir Andrew).

"It was wonderful," Panjabi told pool reporters later. "They're very kind people that really have this great ability to connect with people. They were very generous with their time." She said she and Kate talked about a favorite cupcake place in London they both used to frequent, along with Kate's sister, Pippa Middleton.

Jenna Lyons, the half-British director of J Crew (Kate wore J Crew toothpick jeans at the NBA game Monday night), said she went to the game and observed the famous meeting between royal Will and Kate and pop-royal Jay Z and Beyoncé.

"For her, that was so exciting and sort of surreal, having had a very formal morning, and then going and meeting the King and Queen of Pop," Lyons said. "She's very gracious and lovely."

The couple will spend a couple of hours at the St. Andrews gala; Tom Hanks, among the stars expected (his daughter went to St. Andrews), will give the after-dinner toast.

And enthusiastic recycler, Kate last wore the striking green Packham gown (sweetheart neckline, off-the-shoulder, cinched in black velvet at waist) in February for a gala at Britain's National Portrait Gallery, where she is the royal patron.

That time she wore a fabulous diamond necklace borrowed from the queen; tonight, her neckline was bare but she had on diamond and emerald drop earrings.

After the gala ends around 9;30 pm, they head straight to JFK for their commercial flight home to London late Tuesday, after 48 event-packed hours in New York and Washington stretched over three days.
