The 18-year-old, identified by the police as Gauthami, was shot on campus on the outskirts of the city along with a friend, who is now in hospital.
The suspect, described by police sources as an office assistant named Mahesh, is missing. Three police teams are searching for him. He is reportedly 30 years old; like the Class 12 student who was killed, he belonged to a town in the Tumakuru district, about 80 km from Bengaluru.
"According to the girl's friend, Sirisha, who was injured in the firing, the attacker barged into Gauthami's third-floor hostel room of Gauthami around 11 pm on Tuesday and opened fire after she heard a knock and opened the door," said Police Commissioner MN Reddi.
The suspect had been working for two years at the school where the shooting took place.
