Several area residents reported feeling the magnitude 4.0 earthquake from Maine that rattled New England last night.

The epicenter of the quake was reported in Maine, but residents from Fitchburg and Athol south to Northbridge and Brimfield reported several seconds of trembling.

"It was definitely shaking," said Fitchburg Police Lt. Timothy McDermott. "It went on for a few seconds."

The lieutenant said calls were flooding the police station from people asking what had happened.

There were no immediate local reports of damage from the earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed the epicenter of the 7:12 p.m. quake was three miles deep, about four miles from Hollis Center, Maine.

Peter Hardy of West Boylston described the earthquake as a quick rumble. Nothing fell over or was damaged, he said.

"Just some shaking glassware in the china cabinet," Mr. Hardy said.

Former longtime Worcester resident Gordie Raynes, who lives in an apartment building in Auburn, Maine, about an hour and 45 minutes from the epicenter, said he definitely felt it.

"At first I thought it was one of three things," Mr. Raynes said. "I said it's either a loud motorcycle, a chopper from the hospital that was buzzing the building, or, I said, it's an earthquake."

Mr. Raynes said his social media contacts were reporting feeling the earthquake up and down the coast of Maine, and he heard it was felt as far south as Rhode Island.

"Believe it or not, the windows were shaking," Mr. Raynes said. "My friend, who lives on the sixth floor, was absolutely petrified."

He said a friend reported that just before the earthquake struck, her dog bolted and hid under the couch.

The last time a significant earthquake was felt in Central Massachusetts was Aug. 23, 2011, when a magnitude 5.9 quake hit with an epicenter in Virginia.

In Waterboro, Maine, near the epicenter, about 20 customers and staff at Waterboro House of Pizza ran outside when they heard a loud bang and the building shook.

The Seabrook Station nuclear power plant, about 60 miles away in New Hampshire, declared an unusual event, but said it wasn't affected. The plant has been offline for refueling.

Material from The Associated Press was used in this report.
