Syrian Troops Battle Insurgents as Cease-Fire Violated - Bloomberg

Syrian forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and rebels seeking to overthrow him engaged in "heavy fighting" on the first day of a cease-fire to mark the Eid al-Adha Muslim holiday, an opposition group said.

Fighting broke out near Maarat al-Numan in Idlib province when government forces tried to storm a rebel camp in a "clear violation of the cease-fire," the U.K.-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said in an e-mail today.

Clashes continued in many parts of Syria overnight and violence was reported after the dawn start of the cease-fire, proposed by United Nations special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi. At least seven people have been killed in fighting since midnight, according to the observatory.

Three people were wounded following Friday prayers when Syrian forces fired at demonstrators in the Ankal, Jasim and Al Maliha areas of Daraa, the observatory said. A woman died of injuries she suffered when houses in Aleppo were shelled last night, it said. Protests were taking place today in Aleppo, suburbs of Damascus, the capital, as well as Al Zour, Homs and Idlib, it said.

Syrian state television announced yesterday that the army would recognize the cease-fire while reserving the right to respond to rebel attacks.

At least 35,000 people have been killed since the uprising against Assad's government began 19 months ago, according to the observatory. The UN has registered more than 350,000 Syrians who have fled from their homeland during the conflict, which has spilled over into Lebanon and Turkey.

The agreement to respect a truce during Eid al-Adha, the Muslim feast of sacrifice, is the first time since April that the two sides said they would stop fighting. While neither side upheld the previous cease-fire, arranged by Brahimi's predecessor, Kofi Annan, the truce slowed the tempo of killing for a few days.

More than 120 Syrians were killed in fighting yesterday, the observatory said on its Facebook page, adding that 57 civilians including five children and 25 rebel fighters were among the dead.

Saudi Arabia said yesterday that it had deported three people working in Syria's consulate in Jeddah after concluding that "their behaviors are incompatible with their consular duties and assignments," according to the state-run Saudi Press Agency, which cited a Foreign Ministry statement.

The kingdom, which is hosting Islam's annual hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, closed its embassy in Damascus in March, a month after expelling Syria's ambassador to Riyadh.
