Here are a few events around the Chicago area being held for Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

"The MLK Project: The Fight for Civil Rights": This is the seventh year for "The MLK Project," which tours locally to area schools through February. Presented by Writers' Theatre in Glencoe, the one-woman show was written by Yolanda Androzzo, is directed by Jimmy McDermott and features Caren Blackmore. Alaya is a Chicago student who undergoes a personal transformation from angry violence to artistic expression through her study of the civil rights movement. It opens with a public performance. Noon Monday at the Chicago History Museum, 1601 N. Clark St.; admission is free and includes entry to the museum; writerstheatre.org/education.

Meet Christopher Paul Curtis, author of "Bud, Not Buddy": "Bud, Not Buddy" follows the journey of a young African-American orphan as he searches for his father in Depression-era Michigan. First a children's book, the story has been adapted by Reginald Andre Jackson into a play presented by Chicago Children's Theatre, directed by Derrick Sanders. The book's author, Christopher Paul Curtis, will talk about his work and meet with fans at an MLK Day event put on by the theater. 1 p.m. Monday at the Chase Auditorium, 10 S. "What Does It Mean, Dr. King?": An interactive piece of music and theater for kids. 11 a.m., 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Monday at Chicago Children's Museum, 700 E. Grand Ave. on Navy Pier; chicagochildrensmuseum.org

At the Brookfield Zoo: Admission is free at the zoo for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration. At noon, there's a screening of a film depicting
