"He was a big friendly giant, the nicest possible guy," said his sister Amanda, 31.
"He would always put people before himself, although he didn't have children of his own, he had many god children who he loved.
"We're all in shock, we lost our father this time last year so my mother is struggling."
After hearing about the crash on the news the family frantically tried to ring him but could not get through, knowing it was near his work. They were told the news a few hours later.
She said that Mr Wood was already starting to plan his 40th birthday celebrations in April.
His brother Darren, 35, said the last he had heard from him was when he had text him to check on his baby nephew who was in hospital.
"I had text back to say he was OK and Matt said 'great news, speak soon'. And that was the last I heard from him," he told the Daily Mail.
"He was always on time or early for work that's the kind of guy he was. If only he had been late this one time."
Alan Brown, the chief executive of Rentokil Initial, also paid tribute to the "warm and generous man" who was a "cornerstone of our team".
He said: "We can confirm that our Rentokil Initial colleague, Matt Wood, was fatally injured in this morning's helicopter crash as he was walking to our office in Vauxhall.
"Matt was well known to all of us who visit the Vauxhall office, including myself. He was in every respect a warm and generous man and a cornerstone of our team in Vauxhall.
"We extend our deepest sympathy to Matt's family and to our colleagues in Vauxhall who, though safely evacuated, will be deeply affected by this tragic accident."
Another colleague told The Daily Telegraph: "It has been a terrible day for us."
"There were 10 people inside, who were evacuated to safety and we had initially hoped that everyone was OK but a colleague died outside the office."
The helicopter London during the morning rush hour, killing the pilot and a pedestrian, may have been out of control before it hit a crane and broke apart.
The pilot was Pete Barnes, 50, a married father of two who had won an award for bravery while flying an air ambulance and was described by colleagues as the best pilot they knew. He was one of Britain's most experienced pilots.
