AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Members of Maine's congressional delegation are unhappy with a U.S. Postal Service plan to eliminate regular Saturday mail delivery beginning in August.
Democratic Reps. Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree sent a letter to congressional leaders urging them to pass a law to reform the Postal Service.
Their letter says the move by the Postal Service could disproportionately affect rural communities. It also says Congress needs to act on postal reform in order to avoid unnecessary service disruptions that could affect families and businesses.
Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine co-sponsored a bill last year that would prohibit the Postal Service from eliminating Saturday delivery for at least two years. Collins says cutting Saturday delivery is inconsistent with current law and threatens to further jeopardize the Postal Service's customer base.
