After several hours of waiting for the final declaration of Kenya presidential elections results, Uhuru Kenyatta, the Deputy Prime Minister of Kenya has been confirmed winner of the March 4 presidential elections by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
According to the IEBC Chair Ahmed Issack Hassan, Kenyatta of the Jubilee alliance garnered 6,173,433 of the total 12,330,028 votes cast representing 50.07% and he received more than the required 25% in 32 out of the 47 counties in Kenya. He was followed by his main rival, the incumbent Prime Minister Raila Odinga of CORD alliance who received 5,340,546.
Mr. Musalia Mudavadi came in a distant third place with 484,981, ahead of Mr. Peter Kenneth with 72,786; Mr. Mohammed Dida with 52,888 and Ms. Martha Karua at 43,881. Other contestants, Prof James ole Kiyiapi was next with 40,998 while Mr. Paul Muite came last with with 12,580.
Turnout reached over 80 percent of the 14.3 million eligible voters.
This results come in after 6 days of an electoral process characterized by technical hitches resulting in delays in both voting and counting and a few coastal scuffles, this time, the elections were peaceful, free and fair, winning praise from international observers despite widespread fears of a repeat of violence which overshadowed the 2007 general elections where about 1,200 people were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced over disputed polls.
The win by Kenyatta could greatly affect Kenya's relations with the West as Kenyatta faces charges at the International Criminal Court for his alleged role in directing some of Kenya's 2007 post-election violence. His running mate, William Ruto, faces similar charges
Earlier, a close adviser to Odinga said he would not concede the election and would launch a legal challenge if Kenyatta was officially declared the victor.
Kenyans have displayed a high level of maturity and patience during this elections and it will hopefully restore the nation's reputation as one of Africa's most stable democracies. The main test will be whether any challenges to the outcome will be directed at the courts rather than the streets.
