NEW YORK - As hundreds of construction workers watched and applauded the historic milestone, the final two sections of the 408-foot steel spire that will crown the top of One World Trade Center were hoisted to the top of the iconic tower on Thursday.  When Sections 17 and 18 are installed at a later date, One WTC, knicknamed the "Freedom Tower", will stand a symbolic 1,776 feet high, making it the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and the third tallest in the world.

The sections raised today weigh just over 22 tons and stand 75 feet high. All 18 sections of spire, which together weigh 758 tons, will serve a state-of-the-art broadcast facility that will provide unparalleled transmission services for the region's broadcast outlets. The Port Authority's equity partner, The Durst Organization, will oversee construction and operation of the facility.

In addition to 18 sections of steel, the spire includes three communication rings and a maintenance platform, which weigh an additional 727 tons, for a total weight of 1,485 tons. The Beacon, which is the top of the spire, contains 288 50-watt LED modules that produce a combined 288,000 lumens of light.  The light produced by the LED modules will be visible up to 50 miles away on a clear day.

Prior to its arrival at the World Trade Center site, the spire traveled 1,500 nautical miles down the Atlantic seaboard from Valleyfield, Quebec to Pier 25 in Lower Manhattan in late 2012. Crews then transported the steel to the 16-acre site where workers carefully hoisted the first piece, weighing more than 67 tons, to the top of One WTC on December 12, 2012. Ironworkers installed the first section on January 15, 2013.

Portions of the spire, including parts of the communication rings and the beacon were completed in South Plainfield, NJ. The spire is made of steel, the broadcast rings are galvanized steel and the beacon is stainless steel.

The spire will sit atop One WTC, which has become an iconic landmark in Lower Manhattan's newly restored skyline. One WTC stands 104 stories tall and features three million square feet of office space.  A state-of-the-art observation deck, developed and operated by Legends Hospitality, will occupy floors 100-102 and offer breathtaking views of New York City and the region.
