Egypt's powerful military gave a "last-chance" ultimatum on Monday to Morsi, giving him 48 hours to meet the demands of millions of protesters in the streets, or the generals will intervene and impose their own plan for the country.
An alliance of the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists read a statement at a televised news conference in the early hours of Tuesday morning, calling on all people "to rally in defence of legitimacy and reject any attempt to overturn it."
Safwat Abdel-Ghani, speaking on behalf of the pro-Morsi National Alliance to Support Legitimacy, stressed that "the Egyptian army is owned by all of Egypt" and rejected "the attempt by some to use the great military to turn against legitimacy".
The army's statement, however, seemed to fuel the flow of anti-Morsi crowds into city squares around the country where protesters chanted and sang.
The statement did not exactly define "the people's demands" but said that if they were not realised, the military would be obliged to "announce a roadmap for the future".
It is the second ultimatum to be given to Morsi and the opposition to reach an agreement.
So far, President Morsi has vowed he will remain in his position, but the opposition and crowds in the street - who numbered in the millions nationwide - have made clear they will accept nothing less than his departure and a transition to early presidential elections.
Any army move against Morsi after the two-day deadline risks a backlash from Morsi's Islamist backers, including his powerful Muslim Brotherhood and hard-liners, some of whom belong to former armed militant groups.
