Ontarians in five provincial ridings will need to do one more thing before packing for the long summer weekend — vote.
Premier Kathleen Wynne will call five byelections for Aug. 1 in London West, Windsor-Tecumseh, Scarborough-Guildwood, Etobicoke-Lakeshore and Ottawa South, a government source confirmed Tuesday.
The byelections will replace Liberal MPPs Chris Bentley, Dwight Duncan, Margarett Best, Laurel Broten and Dalton McGuinty who have all resigned their seats.
Tory MPP Lisa MacLeod said the decision to hold a byelection on the Thursday before a long weekend — after a summer campaign when most voters are away or focused on lighter pursuits — is evidence that the premier is willing to do anything to win.
"This is as close that she can overtly come to cheating as possible without stuffing ballot boxes herself," MacLeod said.
Health Minister and Liberal campaign co-chair Deb Matthews said it's absurd to suggest there shouldn't be an election over the summer months.
"Maybe the Tories are all up in Muskoka but everybody else is still working," Matthews said.
Opposition parties are already focusing on one particular Liberal byelection candidate — Ken Coran, former president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) — who will seek a seat in London West.
NDP MPP Cheri DiNovo branded Coran's decision to run for the Ontario Liberal Party as "shameful," after the fight his union put up over contracts imposed by the Dalton McGuinty government.
"Let me tell you, the teachers in my riding are still livid about Bill 115. They've not forgiven the Liberals one bit," DiNovo said Tuesday. "They understand that the Liberals attacked the very collective bargaining process that they hold dear."
Ontario Liberals brought in Bill 115 to give themselves the power to hold teachers to a pay freeze and to end the benefit of cashing out unused sick days.
Contracts were imposed on the OSSTF and the Elementary Teacher's Federation of Ontario (ETFO) by the former premier Dalton McGuinty government.
Wynne, the incoming premier, cracked open the imposed contracts and reached new agreements with both unions.
Matthews said Coran has been a Liberal for a long time, and she's proud that he's chosen to stand as a candidate.
