The former chief of Princess Diana's royal bodyguards yesterday dismissed new claims the SAS was involved in her death 16 years ago.
Sensational allegations emerged during ex-SAS sniper Danny Nightingale's court martial for possession of an illegal firearm.
Ex-Met royal protection chief Dai Davies said: "I'm mystified how any new information can possibly allege anything other than this was a tragic accident."
And former SAS officer Colonel Tim Collins said the claim was "utter nonsense".
Allegations of a "cover-up" appeared in a letter from the parents-in-law of a special forces soldier to his commanding officer. The soldier was a key prosecution witness in Nightingale's trial.
Scotland Yard said the Met was "scoping information" and assessing its "relevance and credibility."
Diana and boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed died in a car crash in a Paris underpass in 1997.
