Iran talks: hopes for breakthrough on 'right to enrich' sticking point - Telegraph.co.uk

Trita Parsi, president of the National Iranian American Council, said that a way had been found to overcome this obstacle. Any agreement would not refer explicitly to enrichment, but to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, which Iran interprets as giving it the right to possess this technology. "Both sides won," wrote Mr Parsi in an email. "The two sides are now one step closer to a deal."

If this issue has been solved, Mr Kerry will have to grapple with a second key dispute. America and its allies want Iran to stop building a new plutonium reactor at Arak, fearing that otherwise this facility could provide an alternative route to a nuclear weapons-capability.

The Arak issue prevented agreement at the last round of talks 12 days ago, which Mr Kerry also joined.

Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, arrived in Geneva on Friday night, a development which may have prompted Mr Kerry to follow. William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, confirmed on this Twitter account that he will fly to Geneva on Saturday. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius is also set to join the talks.

The White House voiced optimism about the talks, saying: "We hope that an agreement can be reached."

Abbas Araqchi, Iran's deputy foreign minister said: "To a good degree, we have moved (closer) towards agreement."
