Carolyn A. Murray, Acting Essex County Prosecutor, leads a press conference to announce four people are in custody in connection with a deadly carjacking outside The Mall at Short Hills.
The four suspects arrested in deadly Short Hills carjacking, clockwise from top, Hanif Thompson, 29 , of Irvington and three Newark men: Kevin Roberts, 33, Karif Ford, 31, and Basim Henry, 32.
Dustin Friedland, of Hoboken, was shot in the head as he and his wife were getting into their car in a parking deck of the upscale mall. The couple's 2012 Range Rover was found abandoned in Newark the next day.
The suspects were arrested in Newark, Irvington and Easton, PA between 9 p.m. Friday and 3 this morning, authorities said.
The suspects were identified Saturday as 29-year-old Hanif Thompson, of Irvington; and three Newark men: Karif Ford, 31, Basim Henry, 32 and Kevin Roberts, 33. Henry was arrested in a hotel room in Easton; the others, at their homes.
The four have been charged with murder, felony murder, carjacking, conspiracy, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose. They are being held on $2 million bail each and face the possibility of life in prison, if convicted.
Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray said the suspects had targeted the luxury car – and not Friedland or his wife, Jamie -- when they drove a Suburban through a mall parking deck last Sunday. Two suspects left in the victim's car, and two in the Suburban, she said.

Murray said investigators got many tips on their hotline for the investigation; $41,000 in reward money was being offered in connection with the crime.
Several law-enforcement agencies were involved in the case including a task force assembled to address the "epidemic" of carjackings in Essex County, said U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman. The mall is in Essex as is Newark, known for its high incidence of the crime.
"You have the right and the expectation to be safe in this county," Fishman said. "We are working diligently around the clock to make sure no one in Essex County has to be worried about that."

The brutal slaying of Friedman triggered fears that the alarmingly high rate of carjackings in Newark, Irvington, and East Orange was spreading to the suburbs.
In 2011, the last year for which full data are available, a total of 379 carjackings were reported in New Jersey, and 277 of them occurred in Essex County, according to an annual report published by the state Attorney General's Office. In one of those incidents, an off-duty corrections officer, Debora Ferreira, was killed by her assailant in Newark.
Report: 73 percent of NJ carjackings happened in Essex County in 2011
