A Jakarta commuter train collided with a fuel tanker killing at least two people, in the latest deadly transport accident in the world's fourth-most populous country.
The train driver and a technician died in today's crash in Indonesia's capital, with no confirmation on passenger casualties, said Eva Chairunnisa, a spokeswoman for rail company PT KAI Commuter Jabodetabek. At least seven people died and about 20 were injured, the Associated Press reported, citing Rikwanto, a police spokesman.
The accident highlights the need to upgrade the archipelago's transport network as growth in Southeast Asia's largest economy strains the capacity of railways, ports and airports. State railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia and Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo are trying to ease congestion by buying more commuter trains and by building underground metro and overhead monorail lines.
"The lack of adequate infrastructure, especially in transport, is holding back Indonesia's economic growth, and it is getting worse everyday," said John Rachmat, head of equity research at PT Mandiri Sekuritas in Jakarta. "We do have a number of new infrastructure projects being put in place but the growth has been overwhelmed by demand."
Commuters in the Jakarta metropolitan area, with a population of about 28 million according to a 2010 census, are regularly delayed for hours.
The Tanah Abang-Serpong train line is closed while the damaged train is being removed, Chairunnisa said. The train hit a truck carrying 24,000 kiloliters of gasoline, Ali Mundakir, a spokesman at state energy company PT Pertamina, said in a statement today. Indonesia's Metro TV showed a fireball rising from the line and a toppled carriage.
Human error probably caused a 2010 accident when two trains collided on Java island killing 35 people, according to the national railway operator.
