Its success led Britain's ITV to buy a majority stake in Gurney Productions, which makes the programme, for $40 million (£25 million) in December 2012.
In a statement, A+E said it was "extremely disappointed" and stressed that the remarks were "based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series".
"His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community," the statement said.
However A+E was sharply criticised by some fans of the programme, which centres on Robertson, his brother, and two of his sons as they run their family business, which makes products for duck hunters.
Bobby Jindal, Louisiana's Republican governor, defended Robertson and his family as "great citizens of the state of Louisiana" and said they had fallen victim to the "politically correct crowd".
"I remember when TV networks believed in the First Amendment," said Mr Jindal, referring to Americans' constitutionally-protected right to free speech. He said it was a "messed up situation" when Robertson to be suspended while Miley Cyrus, the young pop singer renowned for her explicit performances, "got a laugh".
"I don't agree with quite a bit of stuff I read in magazine interviews or see on TV," said the governor. "In fact, come to think of it, I find a good bit of it offensive. But I also acknowledge that this is a free country and everyone is entitled to express their views".
In a statement intended to explain his remarks, Robertson said: "I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me.
"We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other."
