For three months, John Michael Siscoe beat up his former friend while holding him captive in a Toronto apartment. He beat him with broom handles, set him on fire, confined him to a tiny closet and placed pins through his lips to silence his screams. The victim's wife, who had become Siscoe's girlfriend, watched the abuse impassively in the home the three shared.
On Friday in a packed courtroom at Superior Court of Justice, Justice John McMahon declared Siscoe a dangerous offender. Granting the crown's request, Justice McMahon gave Siscoe an indeterminate sentence on five counts: two counts of aggravated assault and one count each of sexual assault causing bodily harm, forcible confinement and uttering threats.
Siscoe is a father of four, including a daughter by the wife of his victim.
The sentencing caps a lengthy court process that began when police discovered the horrific pattern of almost daily abuse in 2010.
It's the sort of case that takes its toll on everybody who is involved in it
During the trial in 2012, court heard that, to "treat" his victim's injuries, Siscoe would cauterize the wounds with a red-hot knife or sew them shut with a needle and thread. As the abuse continued for months, the victim's wife simply watched, occasionally yelling at her husband to "shut up" when his screams rang out.
In January of 2012 both accused pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and sexual assault causing bodily harm. The victim's wife further pleaded to failing to provide the necessities of life, and Siscoe to forcible confinement and threatening bodily harm. In May the court sentenced the woman to eight years in prison.
The crown sought a declaration that Siscoe was a dangerous offender; it took nearly two years for the court to obtain, review and rule on the reports from a psychiatrist and a psychologist. During that time, Siscoe has been locked up at the West Toronto Detention Centre.
Siscoe has been beaten up three times in prison, sources told the National Post. Siscoe's lawyer, Victoria Tucci, on Friday asked the court to help her obtain protective custody for Siscoe. Justice McMahon asked the Crown to contact Corrections Canada and look into putting Siscoe in "super-protective custody."
On Friday Paul Leishman, the crown attorney in the case, expressed relief that the court process was complete.
"It's the sort of case that takes its toll on everybody who is involved in it," Mr. Leishman said.
