The VIP seats for Mayor de Blasio's inauguration ceremony Wednesday were packed with people who did not find much of a welcome mat when Michael Bloomberg was mayor.

George Gresham, the president of the powerful health care workers union 1199 SEIU, kept warm under a blanket smack-dab in the middle of the front row.

Also in the coveted area were President Hector Figueroa of the building service workers union; Central Labor Council chief Vincent Alvarez, and Arthur Cheliotes, a Communications Workers of America honcho who spent lavishly on attack ads that helped sink Christine Quinn's mayoral bid.
"Once again, working people will feel like we are a part of this city," said Gresham, the first major leader to get behind de Blasio's candidacy.

Two Democrats who once had trouble drawing crowds were surrounded by well-wishers: City Councilwoman-turned-Public Advocate Letitia James and Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito (D-Manhattan), whose candidacy for Council speaker has been blessed by de Blasio.
While Democrats and labor leaders celebrated their return to influence — de Blasio is the first Democratic mayor since 1993 — some familiar faces were absent.

One of Bloomberg's deputy mayors, Howard Wolfson, said in an email that he watched the broadcast on television at home with his family.
The president of the business group Partnership for New York City, Kathryn Wylde, was in Puerto Rico.

"A call to Patti Harris won't cut it anymore," said former Public Advocate Mark Green, referring to Bloomberg's longtime first deputy mayor. "Every relationship is different now. Instead of Democrats and unions brokering to have a say with the Republican moneyed insider establishment, now Democrats are the decision-makers."
