Oscar viewers saw the year's greatest awards drama. But just offstage was an unseen hive of pre-presentation nerves and post-trophy joy. USA TODAY's Bryan Alexander relays unscripted gems from the wings of the Dolby Theatre.
Look who's talking
Jennifer Lawrence spots Sally Field across the hall, and the two run into each other's arms, yelling, "Jen!" "Sally!" "Jen!" "Sally!" "You look gorgeous." "No, you look gorgeous." They repeat the lines until Field finally says, "You win, you look more gorgeous."
Lawrence walks past host Ellen DeGeneres as she pops her head out of her dressing room and yells, "Hey!"
"Hey!" Lawrence says. "Oh, you are talking to me, right?"
"Yes, of course," DeGeneres tells her.
"Oh, thank God," Lawrence says, holding her heart.
"Hello, well, it's time to start," DeGeneres tells her.
"Yes, I know, I have to go find my seat," Lawrence says, then scoots off.
Everyone breaks out in applause as DeGeneres leaves her dressing room. With a big smile, she walks onto stage right.
A host of preparations
Even before the evening begins, DeGeneres receives her first standing ovation.
At the end of the final run-through, a crowd of extras and stand-ins applaud as DeGeneres signs off. Wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and running shoes with yellow stripes, she smiles and waves her hands to request an end to the ovation.
With the buzz of power tools still going for last-minute stage changes, she intently talks with producer Craig Zadan.
Then she accepts a sparkling black jacket from an aide. She slides it on and stares at herself in the monitor.
Satisfied, she puts her sweatshirt back on and walks off.
Bring in the Statues
A media cart filled with Oscars rolls by as John Travolta and Kelly Preston walk into the Architectural Digest Greenroom. "Wow, look at this!" Preston exclaims as she looks around at the décor.
Moments later, a bearded Harrison Ford, who is wearing a gold earring, leads in Calista Flockhart, putting his hand on the small of her back.
The Oscars are rolled backstage. An academy employee wears white gloves as he polishes each Oscar. He loops a paper tag with the serial number around each statuette's neck and carefully places them on the shelf next to the stage.
A couple of famous couples
Samuel L. Jackson joins Travolta and Ford in the greenroom. Robert De Niro enters with his wife, Grace Hightower. "You just missed Robert De Niro," Kim Novak tells a friend.
Not a problem, because moments later, Novak and her husband, Robert Malloy, meet De Niro in front of the restroom.
A traffic jam ensues as Jackson gives De Niro a hug. Preston approaches the De Niros and exclaims, "How is this fabulous couple?"
While Preston shares iPhone photos of son Benjamin, an obviously pregnant Kerry Washington high-fives De Niro's wife. "You can do whatever you want when you're pregnant," Hightower tells Washington. "Don't let anybody tell you any different."
Family meeting
Jared Leto, wearing a white jacket, is waiting with his brother (and Thirty Seconds to Mars bandmate) Shannon as Lupita Nyong'o approaches, carrying the train of her aquamarine dress. The two open their arms wide for a big hug. "It's so good to see you, and I want you to meet my brother," he tells her after saying hello to her brother, Peter.
Leto later points out that his white jacket has caused "some raised eyebrows." He tells his brother, "Kevin Spacey was telling me he got (grief) for wearing a white jacket. People say white jackets are only for daytime."
Give that speech an Oscar
Anne Hathaway holds hands with husband Adam Shulman. They kiss on the cheek and exchange "I love yous." Then Hathaway giggles and looks in his eyes before handing him her clutch.
Supporting-actor winner Leto's speech about dreamers and discrimination goes over famously backstage. Jamie Foxx starts yelling, "Bravo!" even before the applause starts. Washington raises both hands in salutation in front of the monitor. As Leto walks by, Foxx calls out, "Fantastic, fantastic. Chills."
Leto re-meets Hathaway, who gave him his Oscar, in the hallway. "That was so beautiful," she tells him. "That was so great what you said about your mother."
A pinch for good luck
Having given the award for best animated film, Matthew McConaughey is very animated backstage, sneaking up on Channing Tatum and his wife, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, and pinching Tatum on the backside.
Tatum gives him a massive bear hug, literally lifting McConaughey in the air.
Tatum (correctly) predicts a McConaughey victory for best actor in Dallas Buyers Club. "We're just a chip shot away," he says, imitating a short golf shot. "We're this close to the hole."
The newest member of U2?
After introducing U2's nominated song, Ordinary Love (from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom), Brad Pitt walks off, then turns around when he hears applause for The Edge, who is exiting the stage following the band's performance.
"I was coming back for you," Pitt tells him as they give each other a strong embrace. Bono follows Edge out, hugging Pitt, too.
"There's a tambourine waiting for you anytime," Bono says. "Are you here with the missus?"
Front-row delivery!
DeGeneres truly does everything as host. "Get back to your seats, pizza is coming," she says as she appears stage right. She waits for supporting-actress winner Nyong'o in the stage hall. "Oh, my God, you won an Oscar," says DeGeneres, hugging a crying Nyong'o. "It was such a beautiful speech. You were so composed. Go share it with the world."
DeGeneres turns and deals with the Big Mama's & Papa's pizza delivery guy, who has shown up. "What kind is it?" she asks. "Is it still hot? Let's go."
Moments later, she's onstage handing out pizza — much to the dismay of Benedict Cumberbatch, who is backstage about to present an award.
"Damn, I missed the pizza," he says to Jennifer Garner.
Post-performance highs
Consider Zac Efron's night made. He runs into Daniel Day-Lewis backstage and pumps his hand vigorously. "It's so nice to have someone like you to look up to," Efron stammers.
After singing Over the Rainbow, Pink strides backstage in heels and denim. "Look at me, I'm already in jeans," she says. "I was sooooo nervous. I told my husband (Carey Hart) I was going to pass out, and he said, 'Well, it will make the highlight reel.'"
No one is more excited about Wind Beneath My Wings than Bette Midler. She waltzes offstage and grabs Glenn Close for a hug. "I loved it, I loved it," she repeats.
Before getting on the freight elevator, she takes deep breaths with one hand on the wall.
"Party, party," Midler says with a huge smile. One problem, she realizes as the elevator door opens: "Oh, these shoes!"
'Hardest song in history'
Frozen songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Bobby Lopez run smack into Idina Menzel, who has just sung Let It Go.
"Let me see those," says Menzel, hugging the couple as they hand her their trophies.
"You sang the hardest song in Oscar history, and you rocked it," says Anderson-Lopez. "See you at the after-party. We are going to do some drinking."
The home stretch
Cate Blanchett and Day-Lewis stand backstage together for an Oscar eternity, watching the monitor. As McConaughey wins best actor, Day-Lewis proclaims, "That was an extraordinary peformance."
Day-Lewis hugs McConaughey vigorously when he arrives backstage, and Blanchett rubs Lawrence's bare arms. "She just said I was super-soft," Lawrence announces. "You can print that."
DeGeneres is ebullient as the show credits rolls. She hand-slaps stars and show staffers at a sprint. "You are a genius, amazing" producer, she tells Zadan as he hugs her.
"It was fantastic," she says, beaming. "I had so much fun."
