It is expected, and in fact almost natural for some celebrations to have some sort of hiccup during proceedings, but it's always preferred to have them end on a good note. Unfortunately, that is not always the case as despite being a festival to celebrate all art, music, and entertainment, the SXSW ended on a tragic.
Two people were killed when a car crashed through a street barricade and into a crowd during the festival. The driver, named Rashad Charijuan Owens, was alleged to have been driving drunk, not using his brakes and actually accelerating into the crash, the Huffington Post reported.
Hailing from Killeen, located 70 miles north of Austin, the 21-year-old was charged with one count of capital murder, but further charges are open to be held against him.
According to Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo, the crash was due to Owens intentionally swerving into pedestrians with the hope of escaping from an officer who had tried to pull him over.
Acevedo stated that Owens could face another capital murder charge, in addition to what he already has, and 23 counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle.
Owens currently remains in police custody after being charged with a $3 million bail by a district court judge. Despite his appearance in court, no attorney has been listed for Owens by jail records.
Police reports stated that the event started at around 12:30 am Thursday, March 13 when Owens "got scared" after seeing police lights behind him. Owens fear was allegedly due to some outstanding warrants, which meant an arrest could result in a prison sentence of five years.
Owens also stated that the warrants were issued for kidnapping, part of a custody battle over his daughter.
According to an arrest warrant, a breath test showed Owens had a blood alcohol level of .114, which was over the legal limit of .08.
