NEW YORK — The New York Police Department says four of five people pulled from a vehicle submerged in a New York City creek have died. The fifth apparently escaped serious injury.
Police say two men and two women were pronounced dead at area hospitals after rescue divers pulled them from a vehicle submerged in Steinway Creek in Queens around 10:35 p.m. Friday.
Authorities say the survivor was the driver. A fire department spokesman says he was in stable condition at Elmhurst Hospital Center.
It wasn't immediately clear how the vehicle became submerged. Police say they are investigating.
The accident occurred at a dead-end street next to the creek in Astoria, an industrial Queens neighborhood.
