(Photo : Reuters) The former mayor of New York City is reportedly allotting around $50 million to be used in his campaign to minimize the influence of the National Rifle Association. Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg is set to spend $50 million in attempts to challenge the National Rifle Association regarding gun safety, CNN reported.
The money will reportedly come from his own personal pockets, showing his dedication on working for a more gun-free America.
Bloomberg is funneling the money to his new group, Everytown for Gun Safety, which also covers two of his other, similarly-themed groups: Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.
As for his plans, Bloomberg's attempt to compete with the NRA is via copying from the association's own style; an incredibly defined lobbying system and a dedicated campaigning group.
"They say, 'We don't care. We're going to go after you. 'If you don't vote with us we're going to go after your kids and your grandkids and your great-grandkids. And we're never going to stop,'" Bloomberg said, the New York Times reported.
"We've got to make them afraid of us," Bloomberg added. "You've got to work at it piece by piece. One mom and another mom. You've got to wear them down until they finally say, 'Enough.'"
Bloomberg's previous attempts at working towards stricter gun control had previously rubbed off several high-seated Democrats, despite the party usually sitting on the same side of the topic.
Bloomberg's prior work specifically targeted several incumbent Democrats due to his belief that they had not supported the campaign of gun control enough.
In turn, the Democrat leaders argued that Bloomberg was actually working to give control of the Senate to the Republicans, a move that would lead to the hopelessness of trying to pass any sort of gun control legislation.
On his side, Bloomberg waived away the accusations, emphasizing that the concept was about gun control and not Democrats and Republicans.
"You can tell me all you want that the Republicans would be worse in the Senate than the Democrats," he said of the issue. "Maybe they would. But that's not what we're talking about here."
