A South African judge has ordered runner Oscar Pistorius to undergo psychiatric and psychological tests beginning Monday to examine whether his mental state made him "criminally responsible" for shooting his girlfriend.
Judge Thokozile Masipa said Tuesday the doctors will look into whether a mental illness or defect at the time of the shooting affected his ability to recognize it was wrong.
Pistorius will go to the Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital in Pretoria every weekday for up to 30 days.
After the examination is complete, the team of doctors will submit reports to the court, the defense and the prosecution.
The judge said the trial, which began in early March, will resume again on June 30.
Prosecutors allege Pistorius intentionally shot Reeva Steenkamp at his home last year. Pistorius says he killed her by accident, thinking he was shooting at a nighttime intruder.
A defense witness testified last week that Pistorius had an anxiety disorder that causes fear and worry. Prosecutor Gerrie Nel then requested the psychological tests, saying he did not want Pistorius to use such a condition for a possible appeal later on.
If convicted, Pistorius could face life in prison.
Pistorius is known as the "blade runner" for his carbon-fiber prosthetic legs. In 2012, he became the first double amputee to compete in the Olympics.
