A magnitude 7.9 earthquake was reported at 11:01 a.m. Hawaii time Monday in the Aleutian Islands chain.
The earthquake was initially measured at magnitude 8.0, but scientists downgraded it after having time to review the data.
The specific location was 15 miles southeast of Little Pitkin Island.
Based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected, and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.
There have been more than 20 aftershocks since the morning's first earthquake, the latest being a 6.9 magnitude quake at around 3:30 p.m. Hawaii time Monday (see below).
