While the Firefly feature will also offer nutritional information for food it can identify, it immediately sparked fears that it would further challenge high street retailers by encouraging 'showrooming' in which shoppers research and test products in stores, but then buy them online. Technology blog The Verge, described it as "Basically the fastest "Hey I see that thing I want to buy that thing" machine ever made by human hands. Push a button, buy the thing I'm looking at. It's kind of stunning if you think about it. And terrifying."

Analysts at the event said Amazon needed to demonstrate it had innovative features to justify the purchase of the phone, and praised it for innovating in relevant ways, such as imporiving on existing methods that allow phones to scroll through books or web pages simply by tilting them.

Ian Fogg, an analyst at IHS, said "Any company looking to enter the smartphone market in 2014 must think hard about whether the costs and risks are worthwhile. Other strategies exist which are cheaper. Facebook, Yahoo and eBay are all competing hard in mobile without an own-brand smartphone or smartphone OS. Now, over half of Facebook's total advertising revenue comes from mobile. And, much of that mobile revenue is on a competitor's smartphone OS, Google's Android. If Facebook can prosper riding on other company's smartphones then so can Amazon."

Amazon's Fire Phone will launch in America on July 25

The company has built up a huge following via its online websites and existing products, launching the Kindle eReader in 2007, the Kindle Fire tablet in 2011 and the Fire TV set-top box this year. Those platforms mean it now operates one of the largest Android app stores after Google, working in almost 200 countries. Although Facebook has previously launched a phone with HTC, Amazon itself has not attempted to compete directly with Apple or Samsung in the past. With more than 237million active customer accounts globally, comprising customers who have bought something in the last year, Amazon believes it has a head-start over other smartphone manufacturers, such as BlackBerry and Google itself, who have struggled to convince users to pay for applications and services. A spokesman for Carphone Warehouse said, "This device has the potential to lead the way for the next generation of smartphones much as Amazon did with the Kindle for eReaders."

A European release date for the Fire Phone has not yet been announced.
