The ship will initially head east before turning north in the direction of Genoa, according Nick Sloane, the South African salvage master who was in charge of rescuing the vessel.
Despite Intense summer storms and choppy seas, he said this week's forecast will ensure the ship's safe passage to Genoa. "The forecast is a lot better than the last few days so it's time to go."
As divers, engineers and tug boat crews were making their final preparations before today's departure, the man who was responsible for wrecking the ship back in 2012 appeared to be enjoying himself on a different Italian island.
Capt Francesco Schettino was photographed in the company of female friends at a party on Ischia, an island in the Bay of Naples.
Deeply tanned and wearing a white shirt, the ex-skipper was photographed by a local newspaper, Il Golfo (The Gulf).
He is currently on trial in a court in Grosseto in Tuscany and facing charges of abandoning ship, manslaughter and causing a maritime disaster.
There were concerns that the Costa Concordia might begin to disintegrate if hit by bad weather on the voyage. But members of the salvage team said they were confident they would be able to deliver the ship to Genoa without any more catastrophes.
"I can say with great satisfaction that the ship is ready," said Franco Porcellacchia, the Italian engineer in charge of the operation. "We have done everything possible to ensure the ship is structurally solid." The vessel was due to arrive in Genoa by Sunday morning, he added.
Gian Luca Galletti, the Italian environment minister, who was in Giglio to watch the Costa Concordia's departure, said: "We cannot let down our guard. We still have an important part of the operation to complete – the transfer to Genoa."
The Concordia capsized in Jan 2012 with the loss of 32 lives, including a five-year-old Italian girl and members of the ship's crew.
