At least four people were injured in the early hours of Monday as Israel continued to carry out airstrikes on targets in the Gaza strip, hospital officials said. (AP)
JERUSALEM — The Israeli army, air force and navy launched a major operation against the Islamic militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, striking 50 sites in the coastal enclave and mobilizing infantry troops along border for a possible ground incursion designed to stop a barrage of rockets from being fired at Israel.
Israel announced the beginning of "Operation Protective Edge" to strike Hamas and protect southern Israeli citizens from intensified rocket fire from Gaza.
The Israeli military announced it was calling up 1,500 reservists and had moved two infantry brigades into place along the Gaza Strip.
The operation began as tensions remained high in both Israel and West Bank over the recent kidnapping and killing of three Israeli students and an apparent revenge killing of a Palestinian teenager, who was snatched from the street outside his home, taken to a forest and, according to Palestinian prosecutors, burned alive.
Over the last 24 hours, Hamas and other anti-Israel militant groups in Gaza have fired more than 100 mortar rounds and rocket shells at Israel. More than a dozen were intercepted by Israel's U.S.-supported Iron Dome missile-defense batteries, but many others have fallen on Israeli soil. Most of the rockets landed in open fields, but some have hit structures.
Sirens were ringing hourly in southern Israel and life ground to a standstill. The Israeli homefront authority said businesses should shutter, workers should remain at home and all camps for children were cancelled within a 40 kilometer radius of Gaza.
The Israeli military advised citizens to remain close to bomb shelters and ready to dash inside the cement bunkers within seconds of hearing the alarms.
Early Tuesday, the Israeli military said it struck 50 sites in Gaza, including concealed rocket launch pads, training bases, storage facilities, tunnels and shafts and at least three houses.
Reports from Gaza said 12 people were injured in the air strikes, which included a salvo from Israeli warships in the Mediterranean.
According to the Associated Press, Gaza health official Ashraf Al-Kedra said at least nine Palestinian civilians were brought to a Gaza hospital with light to moderate injuries, including several who suffered from shock.
"They chose the direction of escalation," said military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner in a briefing to reporters. "So the mission will go on as long as we feel it is necessary to carry it out. We don't expect it to be a short mission on our behalf."
Lerner said that Israel had offered "calm for calm," but that rocket fire from Gaza escalated in recent days, and now the Israeli military would seek to hit Hamas hard.
The Hamas movement has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007, after the group won parliamentary elections. The seaside strip has been under a partial blockade since then, with Israel restricting the kinds and amounts of goods that can enter and leave, and limiting travel.
Hamas responded by allowing for the construction of dozens of semi-legal tunnels under his border with Egypt. Hamas taxed the goods moving through the smuggling tunnels, and the relatively cheap gas, building materials and consumer goods kept Gaza from collapse.
But after a popular uprising and military coup ousted Egypt's president Mohamed Morsi, whose Muslim Brotherhood sponsors were close allies with Hamas, the Egyptian army began to close the smuggling tunnels down.
Hamas has recently supported a transitional government with its rivals from the Fatah party which controls the Palestinian Authority. Israel and the United States consider Hamas a terror organization, but the Obama organization decided to take a wait-and-see approach to the new government, because though it was supported by Hamas, no Hamas officials served as government ministers.
