Police are looking at both 'criminal and nationalistic' motivations for the murder, details remain unclear
The body of a Palestinian teenager who is a resident of East Jerusalem was found in the Jerusalem Forest on Wednesday morning, following reports of a possible kidnapping.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told i24news that police had received a call in the early morning hours of a teenager being forced into a car in the East Jerusalem village of Beit Hanina. Roadblocks were later set up. About an hour and a half later police got a call that a body had been found in the Jerusalem Forest. The body has yet to be identified, apparently because it had been burned.
"We are pursuing all avenues - both nationalistic motivations and criminal ones," he said.
At the same time, a missing persons report was also filed for 17-year-old Mohammed Hussein Abu Khdair, which police are looking into in connection with the body.
Security forces were also examining the possible role of clan conflicts in Beit Hanina, as well as previous attempts to carry out an abduction against the murdered boy's family.
Meanwhile, security officials have blocked the entrances to Beit Hannina, as hundreds have assembled by the home of the Palestinian teen.
While police have yet to draw conclusions, Israeli media are describing the Palestinians' death as a "revenge killing," as the events follow Tuesday's burial of three Israeli teenagers who were kidnapped and killed by Hamas operatives on June 12.
Additional security forces were being dispatched to East Jerusalem, with major clashes already reported in East Jerusalem as well as on the Temple Mount, which has been closed off to prevent rioting by Muslim worshipers. Several were reported injured in the Shuafat neighborhood.
In a statement issued by the Jerusalem municipality Wednesday morning, Mayor Nir Barkat condemned the "horrible and barbaric" murder.
