Chief Bill Blair still Considering Legal Action after Mixed Messages from Doug Ford - Toronto Star

Police Chief Bill Blair is still considering legal action against Doug Ford for suggesting that he leaked information about Mayor Rob Ford being subpoenaed to testify at Alexander "Sandro" Lisi's trial as "payback."

Despite mixed messages from Councillor Ford, "the chief's position hasn't changed," Blair's spokesperson Mark Pugash told the Star Sunday evening.

When questioned by reporters at city hall on Friday, Doug Ford called the leak "a little payback," insinuating that it was in response to Blair's contract not being renewed by the Police Services Board past April of next year.

"When you have the leadership of the police department releasing a subpoena to the media before they release it to the mayor, you wonder why we need a change at the top?" Ford said.

"Doug Ford is lying, and I am prepared to take legal action," Blair responded in an unusually blunt statement through Pugash.

Ford later told the Star, "I said numerous times: That's my opinion. I'm entitled to my opinion."

He appeared to backpedal further in an interview with the Toronto Sun on Saturday, saying, "It just gets heated some times and, to be frank, I wish it didn't even happen, to be honest with you ... everything gets heated down there and everyone gets a little rambunctious — I'm just as bad as anyone else,"

Ford stopped just short of apologizing or retracting his comments, wishing the departing chief "all the best moving forward."

But in a radio interview Sunday with Newstalk1010, Ford declared: "I'm not scared of any legal action because I didn't say anything wrong."

The possible legal action is the latest flare-up between the outgoing chief and the Ford brothers, who have been highly critical since Blair launched a probe into Rob Ford's activities. He announced in October that police had recovered the infamous video appearing to show the mayor smoking crack.

The Star reported Friday that the mayor will be subpoenaed to testify at the trial of Lisi, who is charged with extortion in connection with attempts to retrieve the video in the days following the Star's first report of its existence in May 2013.

Lisi's preliminary hearing is set for March. A subpoena would mean that Mayor Ford could be forced to testify under oath about matters he has refused to discuss with police.
