Southwestern Alberta is considered a seismic region, and people living near Rocky Mountain House were reminded of that at 9:28 a.m., Saturday.
Natural Resources Canada says that's when a shallow 4.1 magnitude quake hit, about 10 kilometres northeast of the town.
Some people say it wasn't strong enough for them to notice, but local resident Betty Osborne says she sure felt it.
"I thought somebody had crashed in to my garage," exclaimed Osborne. "And I was running around looking out windows to see what was going on…and I turn around and the power's off."
Osborne says she remembers a similar earthquake near Rocky Mountain House about 25 years ago.
AltaLink says her power went out due to automatic safety measures kicking-in at a nearby substation, shutting down the equipment to prevent a surge or other damage on the system.
It led to power outages for around 500 customers in Clearwater County, along with a local gas plant.
The plant flared off excess gas when it lost power, but there was no damage or serious concerns over air quality.
The substation was back-up and running about two hours later. (QR77/td)
