EDMONTON - EDMONTON — Alberta taxpayers will fork over $12,000 for former premier Alison Redford's official portrait in the legislature.
The provincial government confirmed this week it has signed a contract with Calgary artist Liela Chan, whom Redford recently chose for the job.
Many portraits of former premiers have been oil paintings, but Chan says on her website that she mostly works with transparent watercolour on paper.
"When painting faces and figures, I try to capture the uniqueness and inner beauty of each person," Chan writes.
Craig Loewen, spokesman for Premier Dave Hancock, said no timelines have been set and he didn't know whether Redford will sit for the portrait or if it will be done from photographs.
Loewen said the portrait is important because it will hang next to former premier Ed Stelmach's $10,000 portrait on the third floor of the legislature where paintings of every Alberta premier sit side by side going back to Alexander Rutherford.
Redford resigned earlier this year because of spending scandals.
