The B.C. Teachers Federation and the government, along with mediator Vince Ready, are back talking, working toward finding an end to their labor dispute, but are doing so behind closed doors. The BCTF acknowledged a restart of talks but said little else.

Talks restarted on Thursday and the Vancouver Sun reports that the BCTF confirmed there were "discussions" taking place with government negotiator Peter Cameron of the B.C. Public Employers' Association. Union boss Jim Ilker is again leading the talks for the teachers. The BCTF also acknowledged that Mr. Ready, who walked away from talks earlier this month because the two sides were too far apart, is again taking part. The government has not issued a statement on the talks but has not denied they are under way. It's unclear if they are meeting face-to-face or Mr. Ready is moving back and forth between the two sides. It's not been publicized where the sides are talking and each side, according to multiple media reports, has vowed only to speak to media when there is something to report. There are some 500,000 plus students in the province waiting to get back to school and throughout B.C. many are doing online work with parents or with care-givers. The government has 'Teaching at Home' exercises posted on their website. Meanwhile, over 40,000 teachers currently without a paycheck continue to walk picket lines. After striking for the final 2 weeks of school in June and throughout the summer their strike fund has been depleted. The teachers are receiving help from elsewhere, most recently the BCTF was given $100,000 from public school educators in Ontario. B.C. Education Minister Peter Fassbender had been saying throughout the dispute that his Liberal government would not legislate teachers back to work, instead they were determined, he said, to hammer out the negotiated settlement that has eluded them for over a decade. However, after the teachers voted on binding arbitration, which Fassbender had already twice rejected, the minister suggested legislating teachers back to work was a possibility. "The reality is that government has the ultimate ability to legislate in any situation," he said Thursday.
