He said: "It's also been patronising and it has lacked emotion, lacked passion and lacked soul so therefore in a country like Scotland where the heart, head can be taken together that's been a major deficiency."
Although he said plans to "galvanise" voters Scottish voters by the unionist campaign were "far-fetched", he said any more positive campaigning would be welcomed.
Mr Darling denied he and his fellow campaigners were panicking with just ten days to go before the vote and said he did not accept for "one moment" the campaign patronised Scottish voters.
He told BBC Radio 4 that he was "confident" that the unionist campaign would win.
He said: "Unity is strength, working together and recognising our common bonds is an important part of it, so yes, the emotional argument is just as important as the arguments of the head. Actually, both come in to play."
Mr Darling spoke as David Cameron and Gordon Brown launched a final ten-day scramble to save the United Kingdom following a poll suggestion that Scotland is on the brink of voting to break up Britain.
Later this week, Mr Cameron will give details for the transfer of more powers to the Scottish Government if it remains in the UK in an attempt to stem the growing support for independence.
