A Mississauga father of two has drowned after trying to save his 7-year-old son from a powerful current in Lake Huron over the long weekend.
Tomasz Gladkowski, 39, was at the main beach in Port Albert, Ont. on Sunday afternoon when one of his sons became caught in a strong undertow at the mouth of the Nine Mile River and Lake Huron, OPP said.
Gladkowski and another man rushed into the water to save the boy. OPP said the child and the second man made it safely to shore, but Gladkowski did not return.
Jozef Gladkowski, father of the drowned man, described his son as a family man, someone that everyone could count on.
"He was the best father," Jozef Gladkowski told the Star from his Waterloo home. "[The kids] always kissed him, hugged him … he worked very hard, and they had everything they needed. And now everything has fallen apart."
The elder Gladkowski said his son "spent all his time with the kids," two busy young boys that played hockey, soccer, and swam.
"Family was number one," he said. "He tried to give [his kids] all he could, and now I don't know how they're going to live without him."
Tomasz Gladkowski was the eldest of three children, raised in Waterloo. He worked "very hard" as a webmaster for the Polish television channel TV Polonia, his father added.
"He was the best," his father said, his voice breaking. "He was the one everybody could count on, and he always gave a hand … he is a hero."
OPP said that Canadian Coast Guard vessels, a helicopter from Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton, two OPP marine vessels and members from the OPP Emergency Response Team took part in the search for Gladkowski on Sunday afternoon.
On Monday morning, the OPP Underwater Search & Recovery Unit also joined the search. At 1:45 p.m., Gladkowski's body was found in Lake Huron around 150 metres from the shoreline.
