Nicola Sturgeon, the Deputy First Minister, said yesterday the momentum is with Yes but Alistair Darling, leader of the pro-UK Better Together campaign, said he was still confident Scots would reject separation after they examined the economic risks.

Tom Costley, Head of TNS Scotland, said: "This poll reveals a remarkable shift in voting intentions, but the signs were evident in our last couple of polls which indicated a narrowing of the No lead, especially amongst those who told us that they were certain to vote.

"It is too close to call and both sides will now be energised to make the most of the last few days of the campaign and try and persuade the undecided voters of the merits of their respective campaigns."

The survey of 990 people aged 16 and more was conducted between August 27 and Thursday last week. The No vote fell six points from the 45 per cent recorded in the previous TNS survey, published on August 13.

Meanwhile, Yes support increased by six points over the same period from 32 per cent to 38 per cent and the number of undecided voters remained the same on 23 per cent.

TNS said the proportion of women backing the Union has fallen from 49 per cent to 41 per cent over the past month, while the number who intends to vote Yes has increased from 27 per cent to 35 per cent.

Scots aged more than 55 are now the only age group where No voters are in the majority, with 49 per cent supporting the Union compared to 31 per cent wanting separation.

Among those aged under 55, the Yes vote has gone from eight points behind a month ago to a nine-point lead.

A month ago No lead by 46 per cent to 38 per cent among voters certain to vote but the two sides are level pegging now. However, 45 per cent of all voters said they thought No would win and only 31 per cent Yes.

According to a regional breakdown, Yes is in the lead in the Highlands and Islands, the key battleground of Glasgow and by a margin of more than two-to-one in the west of Scotland, with 46 per cent backing separation compared to only 22 per cent opposed.

However, Better Together enjoys a health lead in Mid Scotland and Fife and in the North East of Scotland and is still narrowly in front in the Lothians, which includes Edinburgh.

With the poll recording that 84 per cent of Scots intend to vote, the proportion of undecided people has increased from 16 per cent to 18 per cent, implying that around 600,000 people are determined to vote but have not yet made a decision.

Blair McDougall, campaign director for the pro-UK Better Together organisation, said: "The last couple of days will be seen as the moment the referendum got real.

"We know from these polls that there is no room for a protest vote. The vote of any one of us could be crucial and could make the difference between the UK breaking up and staying together."

Blair Jenkins, his opposite number on the pro-separation Yes Scotland campaign, described it as a "breakthrough poll which confirms that Yes has the momentum".

He said: "Last September the No lead was 22 points – now Yes has surged to draw level at 50/50, and our campaign has the wind in its sails."
