French politicians and oil industry leaders offered their condolences after the death of Christophe de Margerie, 63, chief executive officer of France's largest oil company, Total SA.
He was killed late yesterday, together with three crew members, when his jet crashed as it took off from Moscow's Vnukovo airport.
Francois Hollande, president of France:
"Christophe de Margerie gave his life to French industry and the development of Total. He lifted the company up into the ranks of the world's leaders."
Vladimir Putin, president of Russia:
De Margerie "was a remarkable French businessman who was at the forefront of many large joint projects that laid the foundation of the long, fruitful partnership between Russia and France in the energy sector."
Ben van Beurden, CEO of Royal Dutch Shell Plc:
"I'm extremely sad to hear about the tragic loss of Christophe de Margerie. Christophe was a larger-than-life character, a leader respected across the energy industry and a friend. My thoughts are with his wife and family, and his many thousands of colleagues at Total."
Bob Dudley, CEO of BP Plc:
"The oil and gas industry has lost one of its giant international champions -- an outstanding leader, a distinguished colleague -- and I have lost a personal friend. I offer my sincere condolences to Christophe's immediate family and to his broader family at Total and across the industry. We shall all miss him."
Khalid Al Falih, president and CEO, Saudi Aramco:
"I am shocked and deeply saddened to learn about Christophe's passing. This is a great loss to our industry, for which Christophe exemplified true leadership, courage, humility, and his resilience was inspiring during times of adversity. Not only was he a very good partner, he was also a very good friend."
Daniel Yergin, vice chairman of IHS Inc. and one of the foremost historians of the petroleum industry:
"He provided extraordinary leadership for Total, and had deep understanding of the Middle East. He was a man of great vitality and charm, a statesman who would speak his mind, though with verve and humor."
Manuel Valls, prime minister of France
"France has lost a chief executive who was out of the ordinary and who was able to transform Total into a global giant. By guiding the company towards new sources of energy he prepared it for the future."
Michel Sapin, French finance minister
"He was one the best arguments against French-bashing. I hope that Total very quickly re-finds the stability and the dynamism that it needs."
