VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Kendall Waston headed home a Pedro Morales corner-kick in the 70th minute, and David Ousted pitched his MLS-best 13th clean sheet of the season, as the Vancouver Whitecaps beat the Colorado Rapids 1-0 in their season finale at BC Place.
The 'Caps had to win to reach the post-season after Portland moved past them in the standings with a 2-0 win in Dallas. The team was informed of the result by head coach Carl Robinson at half-time.
Morales sent a hard cross into the box, which Eric Hurtado just missed, but Waston was right behind him to direct the ball in for the opening goal.
Ousted had to make five saves to keep the Rapids off the board. His biggest stop came in the final minute of second half injury time when he made a diving save to his left to preserve the lead.
The Whitecaps ended the season unbeaten in their final five matches, which included four wins and a draw. They wrapped-up with a record of 12W-14D-8L to beat Portland by a single point for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Vancouver will make its second appearance in the MLS post-season. The Whitecaps lost to the LA Galaxy in the knockout round in 2012. They will visit FC Dallas in the knockout round on Wednesday night.
