EDMONTON ─ Six caskets topped with six photos greeted those who attended one of the funeral services for those slain in Edmonton's worst mass killing.
About 200 people packed into Howard and McBride Chapel and Chimes Funeral Home in Edmonton on Tuesday to honour Thuy Tien Truong, 35; her son Elvis Lam, 8; her sister Thanh Ha Thi Truong, 33; her mother Thi Dau Le, 55; her father Van Dang Truong; and Thanh Ha Thi Truong's three-year-old daughter, Valentina Nguyen.
Viet Nguyen, 41 ─ who friends now say was Thuy Tien's boyfriend — was also killed. His funeral is scheduled for Thursday.
Rick Christensen, a close family friend whose wife worked with Thuy Tien Truong at Topco Oilsite Products, remembered her being all smiles when he met with her and Viet Nguyen days before the Dec. 29 slaying.
"We just had dinner with her before Christmas, her and her new boyfriend. She wanted me to meet him and see if he was OK," he said.
"After we had our dinner I told him, 'You take care of her.' And he goes, 'Yes, sir I will. I love her.'
"I guess they're together now, in some sense."
Police say the victims were shot by Phu Lam, 53, at Thuy Tien Truong's north Edmonton home. Phu Lam spared two babies -- his and Thuy Tien Trong's one-year-old daughter, and Thanh Ha Thi Truong's eight-month-old son. Phu Lam also shot Cyndi Duong, 37, at a south-side residence before driving to Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., where he shot himself. Duong's funeral was held on Monday.
